Gum Disease

Gum Disease

All of us will or have suffered gum disease at some point in our life and it is totally treatable, curable and preventable! Lifestyle or medical factors can increase the risk of gum disease:

  • Smoking; reduces blood flow and slows healing
  • Diabetes; delays healing especially if blood sugars not controlled
  • Hormonal changes; such as pregnancy and menopause

It occurs when the teeth and gums are not cleaned properly therefore it is essential to brush along your gum margin and clean between the teeth where the bristles cannot reach.  Once plaque (soft creamy bacteria deposits) are undisturbed it hardens, into tartar (calculus) which we all form at different speeds, and a Dental Hygienist will need to remove it.
